Meridian Manufacturing: Hybrid Silos

When the stored material requires stainless steel contact surfaces but the support structure doesn’t, a Meridian Hybrid Silo provides a practical alternative to full stainless steel construction. The roof, sidewalls and hopper are built from 304L stainless steel, while the legs and structural framework remain carbon steel.

This configuration is suited to fertilizer, brewer’s and distiller’s spent grain, and other corrosive or moisture-heavy materials. It places corrosion resistance where the stored material contacts the silo while avoiding the additional cost of stainless steel in structural areas that don’t contact the product.

Common Applications

  • Fertilizer and agricultural inputs
  • Brewer’s and distiller’s spent grain
  • Corrosive bulk materials
  • Industrial applications where full stainless construction is not required

FAQ

Both are designed to store fertilizer and other dry commodities. A Hybrid Bin incorporates stainless steel in the storage and discharge components, while retaining structural steel for the support system. This provides additional corrosion resistance in the areas most exposed to fertilizer.

Hybrid silos are often selected when the stored material or operating environment is too corrosive for coated carbon steel. By using stainless steel for all product contact surfaces, Hybrid Silos provide improved long-term corrosion resistance while maintaining a cost-effective structural design.

The sidewalls, roof, hopper, and gate components are stainless steel, while the leg structure and support framework remain mild steel.

Spent grain creates a consistently wet environment that can be hard on coated carbon steel over time. Stainless steel product contact surfaces help improve long-term durability and eliminate concerns associated with coating performance in these applications, while keeping the structure economical.

Yes. Hybrid Silos are well suited for a variety of industrial applications where corrosion resistance is important but a fully stainless steel vessel may not be necessary. Meridian works with customers to determine the most appropriate material selection based on the stored product and operating environment.
